One of 5 numbered copies (no. 10) on Whatman paper after 5 on Japan of a total limited edition of 200. It was the Berlin psychiatrist Iwan Bloch (1872–1922) who initialized the present first publication of the manuscript of de Sade’s (1740–1814) most radical work, which was found as a paper scroll of more than 12 meters in the Bastille, where de Sade was emprisoned between 1784 and 1789. – Some rubbing to parts of extremities of the binding. Top edge gilt, orig. wrappers bound in. – Paris, Sceaux chez Jean-Jacques Pauvert, 1948–1949. First Pauvert edition. One of 420 numbered copies on Vélin édition of a total limited edition of 475. The edition, planned in twelve volumes, was completed in ten (see note in vol. III) and was strictly reserved for subscribers. Complete sets with all twelve volumes are hard to find. Sade’s (1741–1814) tales of Juliette were first published in 1797 as vols. V to X of „La nouvelle Justine ou les malheurs de la vertu“, Juliette being the sister of Justine. The present set is pleasantly bound in a matching craft’s binding showing one to five phalli according the number of the volumes.
