Der in Dublin geborene Thomas Parnell (1679–1718) war eng mit Jonathan Swift und Alexander Pope befreundet, zu dessen “Iliad” (1715ff.) er das Vorwort verfasste. Der vorliegende “Essay” ist eine poetologische Allegorie in Gedichtform und das erste und gleichzeitig das einzige grössere Werk, das zu Lebzeiten des mit 39 Jahren Verstorbenen publiziert wurde. Der Poet reitet auf einem geflügelten Ross durch die Gefilde der Poesie, deren verbotenen Bereichen er ausweichen muss, bis er schliesslich in den Palast des sublimen Stils gelangt, wo Erzählung und Beschreibung dafür besorgt sind, angenehme Gefühle auszulösen. Die vorliegende Ausgabe blieb die einzige im 18. Jahrhundert erschienene. In Zürich beschäftigte sich Johann Jakob Bodmer mit Parnell und übersetzte dessen “The Hermit” (“Der Eremite, von Dr. T.
